A team based in Belgian has launched Freeedrive to discourage dangerous driving. Freeedrive is an app that they aim will help keep drivers safer, greener and make driving more cost-effective. They are using Accent Systems’ iBKS 105 for something they call the DrivePad. Thanks to the beacon, the DrivePad can wake up their app whenever users enter the car. While they do not track routes, the app will also use GPS to calculate speed and whether you are actually driving or not. If a driver picks up their phone, the app will give a vocal and push notification to help them not be distracted.

As an app that tries to get you to not use your phone, it’s an interesting concept and fairly unique application of beacon technology that should help keep drivers focused on the road.
